Emergency First Aid in the Workplace (EFAW Course)
Description
This new HSE approved qualification came into effect on 1st October 2009, along with new guidance on assessing the needs of First Aid in your workplace.
Your organizations assessment of First Aid needs may have identified the need for Emergency First Aiders either as an addition to your First Aiders, or where the risk of your business is low. It may identify them, as being sufficient without the need for additional First Aiders.
Duration
A minimum of 6 hours consisting of theory, plus practical activities.
Syllabus
A range of subjects is covered including:
- Responsibilities of First Aider
- Resuscitation
- Angina
- Assessment of the situation
- Heart attacks
- Choking
- Basic hygiene in First Aid
- Bleeding control
- Shock
- Dealing with an unresponsive casualty
- Minor injuries
- Seizures
Certification
Assessment is ongoing by the instructor, and a 3-year qualification will be issued to those who meet the criteria. In addition, the HSE strongly recommend that all students undergo an annual refresher programme of about 3 hours, although it is not mandatory.
Numbers
A maximum of 12 students are allowed and must be aged a minimum of 16 years or above. Bigger groups can be catered for, but the ratio must not exceed 12 students per instructor.
Location
We are able to deliver this course on your site or chosen venue, reducing your costs in respect of additional time out and travelling. If you only have a small number of staff who need training then please contact us for trainer availability in your area
First Aid at Work
(3 day HSE approved course)
This course covers the skills required by a first aider in the workplace. The course will give you the knowledge to deal confidently with first aid emergencies.
Who should attend?
Nominated workplace first aiders, or anyone wanting a comprehensive introduction to first aid. This course is also a first step for those looking to progress to First Aid Instructor status.
The course will give you the knowledge and confidence to deal with a first aid emergency in the workplace.

- Burns and scalds
- Poisoning
- Fractures
- Seizures
- Asthma
- Severe allergic reaction

- Low blood sugar
- Fainting.
Course duration
Three days. The course is usually offered as three consecutive days, however, we also offer it as a split course over several weeks at some centres.
Assessment and certification
After completing an assessment, successful candidates receive a HSE approved certificate valid for three years; after which a re-qualification course becomes necessary. It is strongly recommended that you update your skills by taking an annual refresher.
