Project Manager (Climate Action) – Working from home / London HQ – Up to £65,000 + 10% Bonus + 10% Pension + Wellbeing allowance (£360 p/a) + Life Assurance (4 x salary) + Private healthcare

As the trade association for retail businesses, our purpose is to make a positive difference to the retail industry and the customers it serves, today and in the future.

We tell the story of retail, work with our members to drive positive change and use our expertise and influence to create an economic and policy environment that enables retail businesses to thrive and consumers to benefit.

We do this in a way that delivers value back to our members, justifying their investment in the BRC. This membership comprises over 170 major retailers - whether operating physical stores, multichannel or pureplay online - plus thousands of smaller, independent retailers through several niche retail Trade Associations that are themselves members of BRC. Our members deliver an estimated £180bn of retail sales and employ over 1.5 million employees.

One of the key ways we demonstrate that value is through our policy and regulatory work. As well as supporting them to adapt to challenges across employment, environment and product safety we have developed two change programmes; our Diversity and Inclusion Charter and our Climate Action Roadmap. These change programmes will deliver significant progress on the biggest issues facing retailers through collaboration, guidance and targets.

Climate Action Roadmap

The Climate Action Roadmap was launched in 2021. Developed by our members working with climate experts it is one of the most progressive initiatives globally delivering net zero including all products sold by 2040. All the major UK retailers are signatories and working with the Roadmap to deliver their own net zero commitments. It is broken into 5 pathways covering the key areas of retail operations and their supply chains to tackle the key issues which collectively will deliver net zero.

The 5 pathways are the forums for our work with members and stakeholders to deliver specific objectives. Commercial partners work with us through these pathways, adding their expertise to support our work and raise revenue for the BRC.

The role

Working with the Director of Food and Sustainability, the role-holder will be responsible for managing all aspects of the Roadmap, including the delivery of objectives, promoting its progress and securing commercial partners. In particular

  • Delivering the key objectives for the Roadmap             
  • Promote the value of the Roadmap to BRC members
  • Secure and manage commercial partners
  • Promote the Roadmap Externally
  • Manage the Steering Group

Skills and Experience

  • A skilled Project Manager with the ability to plan and deliver this complex initiative.
  • An interest in climate change, including the drive to net zero and carbon reduction in supply chains.
  • A self-starter capable of using their initiative to identify where new objectives and opportunities will support members and the BRC in progressing the Roadmap.
  • Experienced in ensuring collaboration, engagement and facilitation to deliver objectives with members.
  • Able to demonstrate excellent commercial acumen in attracting new partners, negotiating contracts and agreeing objectives which align with the Roadmap.
  • A confident communicator, capable of articulating complex arguments, presenting to large audiences and influencing senior members and officials.
  • Able to use effective written communication through email and website to succinctly update members, convey key messages and maintain a vibrant website.
  • Someone with the gravitas and confidence to influence a range of stakeholders.
  • Effective in building a strong and influential network of contacts.
  • A trusted and pro-active team player, supporting team colleagues in driving a culture of continual improvement.
