On behalf of a leading national infrastructure business, Principal People have been formally retained to assist in the appointment of an experienced and strategic SHEQ Director. With a strong pipeline of major infrastructure projects across the UK, our client is committed to delivering operational excellence with a focus on safety, sustainability, and quality at its core.
This is a high-profile, business-critical role that will suit a commercially aware and operationally credible SHEQ leader with a strong background in infrastructure.
The Role:
As SHEQ Director, you will be responsible for developing and leading the company’s Safety, Health, Environment and Quality strategy across all business units nationally. Working closely with Key Stakeholders and Senior Operational Leaders, you will shape policy, drive cultural change, and embed best-in-class SHEQ practices that support safe delivery, client satisfaction, and continuous improvement. This is a business that expects all SLT members to lead by example and be "hands on". You will be expected to spend majority of your time travelling to sites across the UK engaging with your team and the wider workforce.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Defining and delivering a forward-thinking SHEQ strategy aligned with business ambitious goals.
- Providing visible leadership to a geographically dispersed SHEQ function across multiple projects.
- Supporting operational delivery teams in driving behavioural safety and risk management on the ground.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant UK legislation, industry regulations, and client expectations.
- Leading on engagement with external regulators, industry bodies, and other key stakeholders.
- Acting as a key advisor to the CEO on SHEQ performance, culture, and improvement opportunities.
- Overseeing SHEQ reporting, audits, incident investigation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- A proven track record as a SHEQ Director within Infrastructure, Utilities, Civil Engineering, Rail, Highways or Energy.
- Strong strategic thinking, with a pragmatic and solutions-focused approach.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- A collaborative mindset with the ability to influence and drive change across all levels of an organisation.
- Flexibility to travel across the UK as needed.
